چکیده

The vomeronasal organ (VNO), also know as Jacobson’s organ, is a paired chemosensory organ mediating the perception of chemical stimuli related to social and/or reproductive behavior (for review, see Farbman, 1992). In rodents, it is an elongated tube, with a crescentshaped sensory epithelium (SE) consisting of basal cells, bipolar neurons and supporting cells. Proliferation continues throughout life (Weiler et al., 1999), so the question arose how this influences the VNO structure. We investigated the VNO with respect to size, histological structure and composition, location within the nasal cavity and proliferative parameters, as well as cell death, from birth to senescence, in both sexes of the rat.

The migration of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone neurons in the developing rat is associated with a transient, caudal projection of the vomeronasal nerve.

Luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) neurons originate in the olfactory placode and vomeronasal organ and migrate to the brain from embryonic day 14 (E14) in the rat. We investigated the development of the vomeronasal nerve and its role as a guide for migrating LHRH neurons. Using fluorescent, lipophilic dye tracing methods, we observed axons that emerge from the vomeronasal organ and c...

Morphology of cat vomeronasal organ non-sensory epithelium during postnatal development

The vomeronasal organ has an important role in mammal's social and sexual behaviours. In addition, it mediates defensive behavior through detection of protein pheromone homologues. In this work, a detailed morphological description of the postnatal development of the non-sensory epithelium (NSE) lining the vomeronasal duct (VND) of the female cat is provided using various histological technique...

The septal organ of the rat during postnatal development.

The septal organ of Masera (SO) is a small, isolated patch of olfactory epithelium, located in the ventral part of the nasal septum. We investigated in this systematic study the postnatal development of the SO in histological sections of rats at various ages from the day of birth (P1) to P666. The SO-area increases to a maximum at P66-P105, just as the animals reach sexual maturity, and decreas...

Structure of Vomeronasal Organ (Jacobson) in the Male Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes)

Introduction: Most mammalians possess an accessory olfactory system, which its first part is called vomeronasal organ (VNO). In this research, we studied the structure of this organ in Azerbaijani red fox. Methods: Heads of 10 healthy male fox carcasses were collected from areas around Tabriz and transferred to the laboratory in frozen form or in fixative solution. Biometrical e...

Activity regulates functional connectivity from the vomeronasal organ to the accessory olfactory bulb.

The mammalian accessory olfactory system is specialized for the detection of chemicals that identify kin and conspecifics. Vomeronasal sensory neurons (VSNs) residing in the vomeronasal organ project axons to the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB), where they form synapses with principal neurons known as mitral cells. The organization of this projection is quite precise and is believed to be essent...
